Crochet shawl pattern, Bontle shawl pattern

About

Bontle means beauty. The inspiration came from all the adjustments and adaptation we all went through due to the pandemic. Most people were isolated, working from home meant spending a lot of time on the internet and questioning about lives, looks, career choices etc. the shawl was designed to embrace our outside and inner beauty, I wanted to remind us that we are still beautiful humans and we need an accessory to lift up our spirits when that negative voice creeps in.

Fun part about the shawl is, it can be customized into any size you desire. It is made bottom up and then use a contrast colour for edging. I saw the edging I used for the first time on a blanket and I loved it. I knew I wanted to use it sometime and Bontle shawl was a perfect fit. Its ribbing creates a knit look you find in knitting designs and I wanted to mimic that.

The stitch used here is very basic which makes this a beginner friendly pattern. The stitch is called a moss stitch and some people call it linen or granite stitch,I don’t think calling either is wrong. It is all personal preference. Moss stitch is made using single crochet or half double crochet and chain ones. when you get to the second row, you stagger your stitches, Meaning you work single crochet or half double crochet on a chain one space from the previous row.

In this pattern, you make moss stitch in single crochet for few rows and next make the stitch using half double crochet which gives beautiful eyelets for the shawl.

Because we are making a shawl, we need increases, so we make one extra stitch at the beginning and end of the row and continue to work the staggered stitches.

Yarn

This shawl shown used Lion brand yarn Ice cream big scoop and Patons Astra yarns, they are weight number 3 yarns. The idea of using baby yarn was that it will be very soft, light weight which make the shawl a perfect season transition item in your wardrobe. Fun thing about making your items is that, you can customize the size.If you want something smaller, you can use a broach to hold it together. If you want a normal size shawl to wrap comfortably around your neck and shoulders, follow the pattern as is.

When you are done with the body, you now make a border. It gives the shawl a feel of a blanket with the ribbing. To make this border, you need a contrast colour to main colour of the shawl to make it pop. The border is basically half double crochet on the third loop and VOILA! you have an amazing accessory.

My pattern tester did it a little different but still turned out beautiful

Have fun making BONTLE SHAWL as you embrace your beauty, inside and out.
